식민지 여성의 저항 관점에서 본 음녀 환상(계 17장)의 연구

그동안 요한계시록 17장의 음녀 환상은 남성적 관점에서 해석되어 왔다. 특별히 요한계시록 17:16에 등장하는 음녀의 심판 장면은 구약의 배경아래 로마제국의 심판을 비유한다는 해석이 지배적이었다. 그런데 음녀가 당한 성폭력과 여성 혐오의 장면(계 17:16)은 비유적 표현임에도 불구하고 여성의 입장에서 읽을 때 불편한 본문인 것은 사실이다. 이와 관련하여 페미니즘 시각의 연구들이 진행되고 있다. 음녀의 환상을 단지 구약의 배경이나 정치 수사학적 관점을 넘어서, 1세기 로마제국의 사회적 배경 아래 여성의 관점에서 해석하는 시도들이다. 요한계시록 17:5는 음녀가 로마라는 도시와 땅의 음녀를 동시에 의미한다고 밝힌다. 여성을 착취하는 로마제국과 착취당하는 땅의 음녀가 긴장 관계에 있는 이중적 상징에 해당한다. 음녀를 로마제국 아래 있었던 성노예 여성으로 볼 수 있는 근거는 성노예 여성을 의미하는 πόρνης의 용례와 이마의 문신에 있다(계 17:5). 더불어 계 17:16은 짐승이 음녀에게 성폭력을 행사하고 살인하는 로마 사회의 성 윤리를 그대로 보여준다. 식민지 여성의 관점에서 보면, 음녀의 심판 장면은 로마의 폭력을 떠올려 저항과 분노를 일으킨다. 결국 바벨론 음녀의 심판을 언급하는 요한계시록 18장은 로마의 멸망 이유가 바로 사치와 폭력에 있으며, 인간의 몸을 상품화하는 데 있음을 고발한다(계 18:7, 13, 24). 당시 로마제국 아래 있었던 식민지 여성들을 착취하고 폭력을 행사한 로마에 대해 하나님의 심판이 작동할 것임을 경고한다. 이러한 접근은 오늘날한국 사회에서 일어나는 성폭력의 문제와 연결할 수 있다. 요한계시록의 환상은 닫혀 있는 묵시가 아니라 21세기를 살아가는 우리의 삶과 맞닿아 있다.
Abstract
The fantasy of a prostitute in the Book of Revelation, Chapter 17, has thus far been interpreted from a male point of view. In particular, it has been widely interpreted that the scene of the judgment of the woman (Rev. 17:16) stands for the judgment of the Roman Empire against the background of the Old Testament. However, although sexual violence by a prostitute is a figurative expression (Rev. 17:16), from a woman’s point of view, it is an uncomfortable text subject to ongoing study in feminist scholarship. This study moves beyond the background of the Old Testament or political rhetoric to present a woman’s point of view in the social background of the Roman Empire in the first century. Rev. 17:5 reveals that the prostitute symbolizes both the city of Rome and the prostitute of the earth. There is a tension between the Roman Empire exploiting women and the prostitute who is exploited. The basis for seeing a prostitute as a female sexual slave under the Roman Empire lies in the use of πόρνης, which means a female sexual slave, and the tattoo on her forehead (Rev. 17:5). In addition, Rev. 17:16 reveals the sexual ethics of Roman society with regard to the sexual assault and murder of women. From the colonial woman’s point of view, the scene of the prostitute’s trial evokes resistance and anger by recalling Roman violence. In the end, Chapter 18 of Revelation, which refers to the judgment of Babylon’s prostitute, argues that the reason for the fall of Rome lies in luxury, violence (Rev. 18:7, 24), and commercializing the human body (Rev. 18:13, 24). It warns that God’s judgment will work against the Roman Empire, which sexually assaulted colonial women whlie engaging in commercialized sex. The commercialization of sex can be linked to the problem of sexual violence in Korean society today. The fantasy of the Book of Revelation is thus still relevant and related to our lives in the 21st century.
