이 연구의 목적은 데카르트의 철학 특히 생리학에서 기술이 차지하는 지위를 해명하는 것이다. 그리고 이 연구는 데카르트 철학에서 기술은 과학적 지식의 실천적 적용 이상을 의미한다는 것, 즉 기술은 형이상학, 자연학, 자연의 실천적 사용, 그리고 인식론에 공통되게 적용되는 개념이라는 점을 보여준다. 데카르트에 따르면, 자연은 신-장인이 자연법칙들을 가지고 제작한 기계이다. 그리고 인간의 기술은 신의 기술을 모방하여 신이 세운 자연법칙들을 따르는 기계들을 제작한다. 이와 함께 인식의 본질은 사물의 무엇임 혹은 형상에 대한 관조로부터 자연의 과정을 지배하는 법칙들과 원리들에 근거한 자연 현상들의 해석으로 이동한다. 다시 말해, 대상의 인식은 그것이 생산된 과정을 인식하는 것을 의미한다. 그러나 자연 현상 특히 생명 현상의 복잡성은 유한한 인간 지성이 그것의 생산 과정을 충분하게 인식하는 것을 어렵게 만든다. 데카르트는 세계-우화와 동물-기계 이론과 같은 가설들을 고안하여 생리학의 이 난점을 해결했다. 이 가설은 신이 제작한 신체-기계를 인간이 만든 기계들을 모델로 하여 이해 가능하게 만드는 해석의 기술이다. 이 기술은 대상을 그대로 재현하거나 모사하지 않고 그것을 인간 지성에게 이해 가능한 것으로 제시하는 역할을 한다.
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to explain the status that technics occupies in Descartes’ philosophy, in particular in his physiology. And this study shows that in Cartesian philosophy technics means more than practical application of scientific knowledge. That is to say, technics is a common notion applying to metaphysics, to physics, to practical use of nature, and to cognition. For Descartes, nature is a machine that God prouced with the laws of nature. And, imitating God’ technics, human being’s technics fabricates machines following the laws of nature established by God. Henceforth, the essence of coginiton moves from the contemplation of quidditas or eidos of thing to the interpretation of nature’s phenomenon based on the laws and principles of nature. In other words, the cognition of object becomes that of processe which produced it. But because of the complexity of natural phenomenon, it is difficult for the finite human intelligence to know sufficiently its process of production. Descartes tried to resolve this difficulty of physiology by inventing the hypothesis such as ‘world-fable’ and ‘animal-machine’ theory. These hypothesis function as an interpretation-technics that renders the complex body-machine produced by God comprehensible to human intellignece.
