헬프타의 제르투르다의 영성:『수련』(Exercitium)을 중심으로

이냐시오가『영신수련』이라고 책의 이름을 지을 때 ‘수련’이란 말은 어디에서 가져온 것일까? 본 연구는 이 질문에서 시작되었다. 답을 찾는 과정에서 고대 그리스도교의 ‘수련’전통이 12세기경에 다시 살아남을 알게 되고, 기존의 ‘성독’의 전통으로부터 ‘영신수련’이라는 새로운 전통으로 넘어가는 중간단계에 헬프타의 제르투르다의『수련』이 있음을 알게 되었다. 헬프타의 제르투르다에 의하면 하느님의 말씀은 우리의 본래적 순수함을 회복시켜준다. 우리가 하느님을 ‘이용’하는 것이 아니라 ‘향유하는’의 자세를 취한다면, 우리의 영혼은 마음 안에서 말씀과 결합하게 된다. 마음은 우리가 말씀을 되새기는 곳이다. 우리가 수련을 통하여 우리의 감각으로부터 그리스도의 감각으로 넘어가고 무질서한 집착으로부터 자유로워지면 우리는 흠없는 존재가 된다. ‘수련’을 통하여 우리는 ‘신화된 마음’을 갖게 된다. 헬프타의 제르트루다는 이를 영적인‘동정’이라고도 한다. 동정은 영적 성장의 결과이고, 말씀을 마음으로 받아들이는 수련을 통해 하느님이 이루어 주시는 변화의 은총이다. 본 연구를 통해서‘성독’과‘영신수련’은 상호 보완되어야 함을 알게 된다.
Abstract
When Ignatius named the book『Exercitium Spiritualis』, where did the word ‘Exercitium’ come from? This study started with this question. In the process, one book written by Gerturde of Helpta had been found which is called『Exercitium』. As studying this book, it was realized that Gertrude of Helfta's『Exercitium』shows an intermediate stage from the tradition of ‘Lectio divina’ to the new tradition of ‘Exercitium Spiritualis’. For her, ‘exercitium’ means edifying ‘inner monatery’ and prepares to receive God’s operation. The heart is where we reflect on the Word. When we pass from our senses to that of Christ through practice and free ourselves from disordered attachments, we become flawless. According to Gertrude of Hefta, we could have a “divinised heart” through‘seeing–loving–believing–and loving more deeply’. finally in this study, it was convinced that ‘Lectio divina’ and ‘Exercitium Spiritualis’ are not mutually exclusive, but complementary.
