Abstract

This study examines the distributional patterns, skewedness, and phonological constraints of glide + high front rising diphthongs occurring after consonants in the transmitted SinoKorean pronunciations during the Middle Korean period. First, the study investigates the skewed distribution of the (C)ㅕ(C) structure within these pronunciations. Among velar consonants, 65.5% (91 cases) of the transmitted SinoKorean forms exhibit the ‘ㅕ(C)’ pattern following the consonant ‘ㄱ’. In the case of labials, 68.3% (28 cases) occur in the ‘ㅁ+ㅕ(C)’ structure, 100% (41 cases) in ‘ㅂ+ㅕ(C)’, and 54.3% (19 cases) in ‘ㅍ+ㅕ(C)’. Even after the dental consonant ‘ㄷ’ and alveolar sounds such as ‘ㅅ’, ‘ㅈ’, and ‘ㅊ’—which were restructured as monophthongs in the evolution toward Middle Korean—the distribution of ‘ㅕ(C)’ still exceeds 50%. This skewed preference for ‘ㅕ(C)’ in the transmitted SinoKorean pronunciations is interpreted as a result of the phonetic proximity and articulatory ease between the front vowel quality of ‘ㅓ’ (which was fronted during the Middle Korean period) and the glide ‘j’, which facilitated the coarticulatory transition. Second, the study examined the distributional constraints of the (C)ㅑ(C) structure following labialized consonants. In the case of nonlabialized consonants, such as dentals and alveolars, the distribution of ‘ㅑ(C)’ appears to some extent: 9.2% (13 instances) for ‘ㄹ+ㅑ(C)’, 5.4% (9 instances) for ‘ㄷ+ㅑ(C)’, 13.9% (42 instances) for ‘ㅅ+ㅑ(C)’, and 22.3% (37 instances) for ‘ㅈ+ㅑ(C)’. Although the proportions remain within the 10∽15% range, these forms are found relatively broadly in the transmitted SinoKorean pronunciations. In contrast, after labialized consonants such as velars and labials—specifically, ‘ㄱ+ㅑ(C)’ for velars and ‘ㅂ+ㅑ(C)’, ‘ㅁ+ㅑ(C)’, and even ‘ㅍ+ㅑ(C)’ for labials—transmitted SinoKorean pronunciations are almost entirely absent, with the sole exception being 愎[X퍅]. This initial consonant constraint for ‘ㅑ(C)’ is discussed in relation to the articulatory feasibility between the initial consonant and the glide ‘j’, as well as between the glide and the following monophthong, considering factors such as coarticulatory ease or avoidance. Additionally, in the case of labials, a sequential constraint involving ‘ㅠ(C)’ is also observed. This is interpreted as the result of the articulatory inhibition of the glide ‘j’—a high front vowel element with [round] features—between two sounds that are relatively easy to articulate together: a labial consonant and the back rounded vowel ‘ㅜ’.
