이 연구는 장 폴 사르트르의 현상학적 존재론의 관점에서 동물 타자 문제에 접근할 것이다. 우선 II장에서는 사르트르의 타자 이론을 소개하고, III장에서는 『동물, 그러므로 나는 존재한다(L’animal que donc je suis)』에 제시된 데리다의 동물 타자론을 사르트르의 타자 이론에 비추어 해석하고, 데리다의 동물론에 관한 해러웨이의 비판과 그 한계를 고찰한다. IV장에서는 서로 다른 철학적 입장을 견지함에도 사르트르와 데리다의 타자론이 어떤 점에서 공명하는가를 분석할 것이다. 이 연구를 통해 우리는 한편으로 ‘인간중심주의’를 피하고, 다른 한편으로 ‘의인화’를 피하는 가운데 동물 타자에 접근할 수 있는 새로운 가능성을 타진해 볼 것이다.
Abstract
This study addresses the issue of the “animal other,” a significant topic in contemporary ecological discourse, as an extension of the theory of the other in contemporary French philosophy. The problem of the animal other represents both an extreme and concrete manifestation of the broader issue of the other, prompting us to consider this problem from a realistic, here-and-now perspective rather than an abstract and speculative one. This study will approach the issue of the animal other through the lens of Jean-Paul Sartre's phenomenological ontology, which presents a unique theory of the other from the mid-20th century. Chapter II introduces Sartre's theory of the Other as developed in L'être et le néant (1947). Chapter III interprets Jacques Derrida's theory of the animal other, presented in L'animal que donc je suis (2006), in relation to Sartre's theory and examines the limitations of Donna J. Haraway's critique of Derrida's approach. Finally, Chapter IV analyzes the ways in which Sartre's and Derrida's theories of the Other resonate despite their differing philosophical positions. Through this study, we will explore new possibilities for approaching the animal other while avoiding both anthropocentrism and anthropomorphism.
