Abstract
In this study, I tried to show the actual condition positively of the use of Japanese color words in novels quantitatively and formally. The followings are the point of study. 1) In ten novels as the subject of investigation, the color words of high frequency are 「siro/kuro/aka/ao」. These color words are basic color word forming the keynote even in Japanese vocabulary system. Even in novels, the particular genre, the basic color words are various because of their characters. 2) Among the color words borrowed from English, 「pinku」 is used frequently. This word is rather settled in Japanese vocabulary system. 3) Most of the subject of describing of color words borrowed form English are limited to clothing, patterns and interior.
