Abstract
This paper attempts to find out the explaining variable for Estallido Social of Chile by applying the theory of meaning construction process of grievances. By doing so, this work informs us that, via meaning construction process of grievances, the grievance which triggered Estallido Social quickly evolved from economic one(inequality) to one that also embraces social grievance such as fragmentation of Chilean society and marketization of public sector. Furthermore, police brutality against protesters reminded Chilean people of the violence they experienced under Pinochet regime and it triggered even further meaning construction of the grievance which embraces economic, social and political ones; never-accomplished eradication of Pinochet's legacy in Chile. Such powerful grievance played a significant role in expanding consensus as well as in strengthening the protesters' solidarity. As a result, Estallido Social could maintain its mobilizational power over 5 months and finally achieved its goal with the election of the constitutional assembly, which reflects protesters' demands. In sum, this paper sheds lights on the internal dynamic of Estallido Social and allows us to better our understanding of explaining variable of the emergence as well as the success of the protest. Furthermore, it hopes to contribute to the making of a theoretical basis to analyze social protests in other Latin American countries.
