Abstract
This paper tries to reconstruct the debates on arabesques in the 18th century. From ancient time to the middle of the 18th century, arabesques were only viewed as accessories in the sense of ornaments. On the occasion of the archaeological discovery of Herculaneum and Pompeii in 1774, since their arabesque wall decorations have become fashionable throughout Europe, the arabesque frame shape was promoted. At the time arabesques were debated as an aesthetic term, and the perspektives of the aesthetic debate can be divided into three parts: the Enlightenment heavily criticized them, classicism was a limited proponent of arabesques, and romanticism enthusiastically accepted them. In addition, the early Romantics tried to combine the artistic value of the arabesque with a new theory of literature. As is well known, this romantic poetics of arabesques was particularly influenced by Goethe and Moritz because their criticism of arabesques paradoxically points to the essential properties of arabesques, namely unbridled imagination, randomness and arbitrariness, deviation from the actual work of art as a mere frame. While Kant's reflections did not directly refer to the arabesque, they also contributed to the development of arabesque poetics by offering a new perspective on the relationship between the decorative frame and the internal artwork. In this article, the discussion of arabesques is understood as transition phases to romanticism. This enables us to grasp the essence of arabesques and the interrelationships of thoughts in more complex ways.
