이 논문은 동물에게는 도덕적 지위가 없으므로 동물은 인간과 다르게 대우해도 된다는 종 차별주의의 주장이 옳지 않음을 보이는 데 목적이 있다. 먼저 Ⅱ장에서는 직접적인 도덕적 지위와 간접적인 도덕적 지위를 구분하여, 동물에게 간접적인 도덕적 지위만 있다는 입장은 문제점을 드러낸다고 주장한다. 그래서 동물에게 직접적인 도덕적 지위를 부여하거나 부여하지 않거나 둘 중 하나를 선택할 수밖에 없다는 결론을 이끌어 낸다. 그리고 Ⅲ장에서는 동물은 직접적 도덕적 지위를 갖지 않는다는 입장, 곧 종 차별주의를 찬성하는 네 가지 주장을 검토해 본다. 인간은 동물과 다른 배타적 특성을 갖는다는 주장, 생물학적으로 인간 종을 특징 지워주는 DNA가 있다는 주장, 인간 종의 구성원들끼리는 특별한 유대감이 있다는 주장, 계약에 참여할 수 있는 인간만이 도덕적 고려의 대상이라는 주장이 그것이다. 나는 이 주장들 모두가 그럴듯하지 못함을 주장하겠다.
Abstract
This paper aims to show speciesism arguing that we may treat animals differently from human beings because they don’t have moral status is not plausible. In section 2, I make a distinction between direct and indirect moral status, and then argue that the position saying that animals have only indirect moral status have difficulties. It follows that we must choose between giving or not giving direct moral status to animals. In section 3, I criticize four arguments for speciesism which says that animals don’t have moral status: human beings have exclusive properties animals cannot have; human beings has DNA which characterize human species biologically; human beings has special solidarity to colleagues; haman beings can participate in moral community because they can make contracts with each other.
