Abstract

This study aims to re-examine the principle of “impersonality” and the question of objectivity in Flaubert in the scientific context of the 19th century. According to Lorraine Daston and Peter Galison, historians of science, objectivity as an epistemic virtue arises only in the middle of the 19th century. Proponents of objectivity were mainly concerned with strict control of their subjectivity (self-discipline and self-effacing) rather than accurate imitation of nature. In this context, it is significant that Flaubert developed his aesthetic around 1850 and that his main aim was the artist’s “impersonality” rather than a realistic representation of the external world. This differs from the realist doctrine of Champfleury, whose ambition was the exact reproduction of reality. The difference between these two can also be seen in their attitudes toward photography. While Champfleury—faced with the amazing mimetic accuracy of photography—ironically decides to defend the artist's subjectivity, Flaubert chooses to compete with this new technology on the ground of objectivity. For Flaubert, literature can, unlike photography, express subjective reality; the issue is finding a way to represent this subjective reality in an objective way. Flaubert's strategy consists in erasing his personality by transposing himself into the mind of others. Salammbô is a remarkable example of this technique because, in this novel, Flaubert effectively erases his modern self to infiltrate the strange, mythological mind of the ancient Carthaginians. Flaubert's aesthetic, thus, creates a non-realist but nonetheless objective literature.
