Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the aspects of Islam depicted in the works of Rachid Boudjedra, a representative anti-Islamic writer, and to reveal the hidden side and depth of his anti-Islamic characteristics. To this end, first, we distinguish two Islams(Islam as faith and belief/Islam as culture and civilization), and explain the grounds for defining him as an atheistic Muslim. Then, we analyze La répudiation, which clearly shows the reality of Islam deeply infiltrated in Algerian society. What he criticizes is Islam that is petrified and corrupted in daily life and abused as an alibi for injustice and injustice, and Islam that is deformed into a ritualistic facade but still exerts binding power. In addition, by analyzing FIS de la haine, which denounces the politicization of Islam, we confirm his criticism and anger toward Islam being used as a political tool to seize power. He criticizes Islam as faith and belief, not as culture and civilization, but it does not mean that his criticism is aimed at Islam itself as faith and belief. What he is accusing is Islam that has distorted and degenerated its original meaning as faith and belief. His attitude toward Islam is neither fragmentary nor simple. In daily life in Algeria, the economic system is rapidly modernizing, and this is also causing social and mental changes. Rachid Boudjedra does not view such changes negatively. However, he does not want modernity to intrude into the traditions of his ancestors and completely destroy them. Because there is something precious and wonderful in the traditional daily lives of Algerians. In short, Rachid Boudjedra only criticizes distorted and corrupted Islam, and does not want the Islamic traditions to be destroyed. Therefore, even if Rachid Boudjedra wrote works that sharply criticized the Islamic religion, we cannot simply define him as an anti-Islamic writer. His identity as an atheistic Muslim must be deeply considered.
