A Comparative study of the Latest Neologisms in French and Russian

This study aims at a comparative morphological and semantic analysis of the latest neologisms in French and Russian. By comparing neologisms coined by speakers of different languages living in the same era but in different societies, namely France and Russia, we aim to explore the universal features of the latest neologisms in the 21st century as well as the differences between individual languages. In order to conduct an objective data-based analysis of neologisms, we extract all neologisms listed in the recent four years (2015, 2017, 2019, and 2021) from the online editions of the French Larousse dictionary(Petit Larousse) and the Russian Academy of Sciences' neologism dictionary(Новое в русской лексике: Словарные материалы), and apply the definitions of neologisms and the methodologies of morphosemantic research designed in this study. In particular, to compare the semantics of the both French and Russian neologisms, a semantic field system consisting of 19 semantic fields - including belief, clothing, food, housing, society/custom/institution, act/emotion, economy/finance, law/crime, politics, art, science/technology, environment, IT, and etc. - is constructed and applied to the French and Russian neologisms, and the results are compared and analyzed.
