이 글은 『중국포교사』에 나타나는 예수회 신부 아담 샬을 바라보는 청나라 순치제와조선 소현 세자의 시선 사이에 있는 차이를 비교하는 분석이다. 차이는 크게세 가지 태도에서 두드러진다. 먼저, 아담 샬을 대하는 태도에서, 순치제에게아담은 훌륭한 신하에 불과한 반면, 세자와 아담은 군신(君臣) 관계가 아닌 친구혹은 형제에 가까웠다. 다음으로, 천주교를 바라보는 관점에서, 순치제에게 “천주의법”은 신하의 덕이었다. “천주의 법”은 또한 유교나 불교의 가르침과 같은 심급에있는 일종의 수신과 수양 지침이었다. 반면, 소현 세자에게 “천주의 법”은 유교나불교의 가르침과 같은 심급에 있는 일련의 수양 지침이 아니었다. 아담의 보고에따르면, 소현 세자는 수양 차원이 아닌 종교 차원에서 천주교를 대했기 때문이다. 마지막으로, 종교와 학문에 대한 태도와 관련해서, 순치제가 서양 종교보다는서양 학문을 중시했다면, 소현 세자는 서양 학문도 물론 중시했지만 서양 종교인천주교를 더 중시했다는 것이 이 글의 주장이다. 여기에, 이 글을 통해 나는 원천사료의 가치를 지닌 소현 세자의 편지를 찾아내어 번역과 함께 소개하였다. 또한,국가 공인을 받고서 중국에서 건립된 최초의 성당이 북경의 남당(南堂)이고,착공은 1650년이고 완공은 1651년에 이뤄졌다는 것도 이 글이 새롭게 밝혀낸사실이다. 결론적으로, 지금까지의 간략한 비교-분석만 보더라도, 『중국포교사』가 동서 교류의 연구에 매우 중요한 자료임이 틀림없다는 점을 강조하고자 한다. 그런데, 안타깝게도 『중국포교사』를 위해 표준 정본이 아직 없다는 점도 아울러지적하고자 한다.
Abstract
HRC (Historica relatio de ortu et progressu fidei orthodoxae in regno Chinensi per missionarios Societatis Jesu ab anno 1581 usque ad annum 1669) is a documentary which was made in memoriam of Jesuit missionary Adam Schall. This contains many dialogues which took places between Shunzhi Emperor of Qing dynasty with Adam Schall, and also two letters of Sohyun Prince of Chosun dynasty. In HRC, these are some noteworthy differences between Shunzhi Emperor and Sohyun Prince, in terms of their perception of Jesuit missionary Adam Schall and their stance on Christianity. This paper clarifies these differences by comparison. First, Adam Shall was a true friend and even a brother for Sohyun Prince, while he was regarded as a good subject for Shunzhi Emperor. Second, as for Christianity,Shunzhi Emperor regarded it as a doctrine for moral cultivation and self-improvement, similar to Confucianism and Buddhism. However, according to Adam Schall, Sohyun Prince accepted it as religion in the European perspective. Finally, Shunzhi Emperor attached greater importance to European science than to Christianity. Meanwhile, according to Schall, Sohyun Prince took Christianity more seriously than Shunzhi Emperor. Even based on this brief comparison,it can be concluded that HRC is a very significant text for studying the interrelated history of the East and West. In this regard, HRC requires urgently a new critical edition for a reliable scholarship.
