16세기 말 17세기 초 예수회의 초기중국선교과정에서 선교사들의 '적응'과정이어떠한 구체적 '환경'에서 수행되었는지 살펴보고자, 이 글은 선교과정에 수행된건축사업의 목적과 건축적 내용을 해석한다. 우선, 선교사들이 중국본토에 마련한거처는 생존과 선교의 거점이자 기독교 사상과 가치의 재현물로서 중요했다. 선교사들은 중국인이 기독교를 수용한 태도에 반응하여 자신들의 거처의 입지,규모, 집 안팎의 꾸밈을 정함에 있어서 자신들의 정체성과 의도를 신중하게 드러내고 또한 감추었다. 또한, 1610년 마테오 리치 신부가 사망했을 때 선교사들은마테오 리치 신부의 묘원을 북경에 조성할 수 있도록 명 만력제로부터 허락을받아내기 위해 세심한 정치적 노력을 기울였고, 그 결과 부성문 바깥에 중국본토에최초의 선교사 무덤을 공식적으로 조성할 수 있었다. 이 업적을 중국선교의 중요업적으로 간주하여 유럽에 자세히 보고한 문헌을 살펴보면, 니콜로 롱고바르도신부가 주도한 그 묘원 설계에서 유럽전통의 장묘성당을 제대로 구현하려 한적극적 의도를 찾아 읽을 수 있다. 이 사업내용은 또한 예수회의 선교활동의정책 변화를 드러내며, 훗날 마침내 중국 본토에 짓게 되는 유럽식 성당을 예고하는동시에 적응주의 정책을 둘러싼 이후의 긴 갈등을 예고한다.
Abstract
Aiming to review the generally accepted understanding of Jesuit accommodation in China, this article examines Jesuits' architectural works in China and how they created their environment through their works for their mission. Jesuits'missionary residences were not only the strongholds for survival and mission,but the places of representation and communication of Christian ideas. The Jesuits revealed and hid their identities by deliberate manipulation of form, size, and equipment of their residences in response to Chinese acceptability. Furthermore,Matteo Ricci's tomb, the first official burial place in China for Christian missionary,was the culmination of Jesuits' early achievements. The meticulous political efforts of the Jesuit missionaries resulted in the grant of Ming emperor to build Palatium Suburbanum, a residence-tomb suburban complex. When carefully examined,the original Palatium's funeral garden, designed by Longobardo, contained an embryonic form of an European church proper, which reflects the ambitious,changing momentum in Jesuits' accommodation policies.
