Abstract
This paper aims to shed some light on the discussion of how shame has ethical-normative force. I start with examining the plausibility of the view that shame cannot align with the conception of moral autonomy on the ground that shame mainly depends on others’ negative reaction whereas guilt and conscience follow an internalized moral rule. Next, I attempt to discuss the structure of self-consciousness implicated in shame and to show that shame is an emotion or emotional disposition based on the internalized standard. Given this, finally I argue that the ethical-normative force of shame is derived from our capacity for making aesthetic judgment.
