플라톤의‘이상국가’의 실현가능성 :‘철인왕’을 중심으로

본 연구는 플라톤의 『국가』에 나타난 ‘철인왕’과 관련된 논의를 정밀하게 분석하여 이상국가의 실현가능성에 대한 진의(眞意)를 파악하고자 한다. 플라톤은 수호자의 공유제를 정의로운 나라, 아름다운 나라, 이상국가의 본질적 특성으로 제시하는 바, 이상국가의 실현은 공유제의 실현을 필수적으로 동반하게 된다. 본 논문은 플라톤의 이상국가가 인간본성의 완전한 개조나 파괴를 전제로 한 공유제에 기반하고 있기 때문에 현실 국가에서 실현 불가능함을 주장할 것이다. 또한 이러한 사실을 플라톤도 잘 알고 있었기 때문에 그 실현가능성에 대한 플라톤의 진의는 정치의 한계를 보여주려는 데 있었다는 레오 슈트라우스의 해석이 타당함을 논증할 것이다.
Abstract
This paper intends to reveal the Plato’s true intention on his Ideal State through a close examination of his Philosopher-Kings. Plato insists that Just state, id est, kallipolis must be based upon guardian’s co-ownership of wives and children. Therefore, logically the possibility of realization of his ideal state have to include the possibility of co-ownership system. But that results in the radical renovation of human nature or the destruction of it. So, this paper agrees with Strauss’ interpretation that Plato intends to show the limits of politics.
