본 논문은 늙음과 죽음에 관한 그리스 신화와 철학의 다양한 논의들을 분석하여 각자 자신의 삶의 윤리적 주체로서 확립할 수 있는 기초를 마련하는데 목표가 있다. 이를 위해 세 가지 측면에서 늙음과 죽음의 현상을 철학적으로 분석한다. 우선 늙음과 인간의 비극적 운명과 관련하여 그리스 신화와 비극에 나타나는 삶에 대한 집착과 죽음을 회피하려는 인간의 보편적인 욕망에 대해 살펴볼 수 있다. 또한 그리스 신화에서 인간의 불멸에 대한 욕망은 단순히 시간의 연장일 뿐이며 실제로 불가능하다는 것을 말하지만, 그리스 철학에 이르러 영혼의 불멸을 통해 신들과 같은 영원한 삶을 획득할 수 있는 가능성을 제시한다. 다음으로 늙음과 죽음에 관한 철학적 입장을 살펴보기 위해 노년과 쾌락, 노년과 지혜, 노년과 죽음으로 주제를 구분하였다. 첫째 노년과 쾌락과 관련하여 노년이 반드시 삶의 쾌락을 잃어버리게 하지 않는다는 주장을 분석한다. 둘째, 노년과 지혜와 관련하여 인생에서 노년의 시기가 가장 원숙하게 지혜를 실천할 수 있다는 주장을 분석한다. 셋째 노년과 죽음과 관련하여 죽음이 늙음이라는 현상을 동반하지만 반드시 두려움의 대상이 아니라는 주장을 분석한다. 마지막으로 늙음과 죽음에 대한 반성적 통찰을 통해 삶의 윤리적 주체로서 확립할 수 있는 계기를 제시하고자 한다. 늙음과 죽음은 모든 인간에게 나타나는 자연적인 현상이기 때문에 사실의 문제이지 당위의 문제는 아니다. 따라서 그것들 그 자체로는 윤리적인 문제를 제기하지 않는다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그것들은 끊임없이 가치의 문제와 연관되어 논의되어왔다. 왜냐하면 늙음이나 죽음 자체 보다는 그것들에 부수적으로 나타나는 현상들이 삶의 양식과 밀접하게 연관되어 평가되기 때문이다. 또한 늙는다는 것은 삶과 죽음에 대해 반성적으로 고찰할 계기를 마련한다. 죽음이라는 한계 상황을 예시하는 늙음을 통해 우리는 자기 자신을 성찰할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 타인에 대해 배려할 수 있는 계기를 발견할 수 있다.
Abstract
This treatise is aimed to provide philosophical basis that we make ourselves establish as ethical subject from analyzing various arguments about ageing and death. I try to classify them into three groups. At the first of all, relating the ageing and human’s tragical destiny, we study on the attachment to life and desire to get away to death. In greek myth the desire of immortality is in vain. It is only extension of life time and delayed to death. So whoever try to be immortal can’t but fail. But if not, it’s very incompletely. But greek philosophers offer the possibility of immortality through the argument of soul. It can be immortal after death, because it is not composite and immaterial. Next, I analyze the philosophical attitude to ageing into tree aspects, exactly pleasure, wisdom, death. Firstly, it isn’t necessary that the old age make our pleasure lost gradually. Secondly, we have practical wisdom properly to old age. Thirdly, death may be accompanied with ageing, but this relation isn’t necessary. And death isn’t the object of fear, too. Finally, I provide a moment to establish ourselves as the ethical subject through reflective thought on ageing and death. They are natural things to human. So this problem are not on ‘what one should be’ but on ‘what it is’. Therefore they provoke the ethical issues by themselves. Nevertheless we have often discussed them relating with value. Because it is appreciated to a lot of phenomena accompanying ageing and death. The problem of ageing is related with the ethics of caring. The ageing indicates beforehand to death as a limitation of human ability, and provides an opportunity to intropect ourselves and to care the other.
