Abstract
This paper focuses on the increasing accessibility of consumer wireless VR devices, investigating the communication conditions they facilitate, with a particular emphasis on how they shape our perceptions. By enabling immersion in virtual worlds through body-worn devices, VR technology mirrors our intrinsic ways of seeing, hearing, and feeling, perpetuating humanity's quest for lifelike, three-dimensional representations of reality. While prevailing discourse in media technology often adopts an instrumentalist viewpoint, highlighting the transformative potential of these devices as envisioned by tech companies and developers, this article positions them within a dynamic media environment, probing how they (re)shape virtual experience conditions, especially in terms of perception. To explore the perceptual conditions enabled by VR devices, this paper revisits and builds upon the theories of Marshall McLuhan, a renowned media ecologist. Extending his perspective, which primarily addressed media up to the television era, this study scrutinizes how modern immersive VR technologies redefine the nature of bodily tactility, traditionally the cornerstone of perception and intellect, and contemplates the implications of this altered tactility as an existential background for human experience.
