근대 시기가 주로 서양 선교사들이 중국어를 연구한 시기였다면, 19세기 말 20세기 초는 선교사뿐만 아니라 서양 중국학자들의 중국어 연구가 본격적으로 활발히 진행된 시기였다. A Chinese Manual(1904)은 근대 시기 서양 선교사들의 문법서에 관한 연구 성과를 어느 정도 반영하면서도 기존의 틀을 벗어나려고 시도했다는 점에서 과도기적인 문법서라고 할 수 있다. 이 책의 기본 구성 역시 문법 교재와 회화 교재를 겸비했다는 면에서 기존 서양 선교사들의 문법서와 차이가 있다. A Chinese Manual(1904)의 기본 품사 체계나 격 체계는 라틴어의 체계가 아닌 중국어에 좀 더 중점을 두고 분석하였으며, 또한 다양한 유형의 使動 구문, 被動 구문, 把字句등을 제시하였는데, 우리는 이로부터 이들 구문의 성질 및 문법 태의 특징을 파악할 수 있었다. 예를 들면 우리는 敎字句와 叫字句를 통해 使役과 致使간의 관계를 알 수 있었으며, 把字句 역시 處置와 非處置의 다양한 용례를 볼 수 있었다. 중국어의 시간 체계에 관하여 A Chinese Manual(1904)에서는 라틴어 체계에 근거한 5시제설이 아닌 3시제설을 채택하였고, 이를 근거로 ‘了’, ‘着’, ‘過’의 여러 용법들을 제시하였는데, 이로부터 우리는 이러한 상 표지가 [동사 - 動相 보어 – 상 표지] 순으로 문법화 되었음을 알 수 있으며, 이는 오늘날의 관점과 크게 다르지 않다. 요컨대 근대 시기가 선교사들이 주축이 되어 중국어 문법 체계를 완성해 나갔던 시기였다면 19세기 말 20세기 초는 이렇게 축적된 지식을 바탕으로 라틴 문법의 영향권에서 벗어나 중국어 자체에 중점을 두고 좀 더 다양한 방식으로 연구한 시기라고 할 수 있는데, 이는 A Chinese Manual(1904)에서 그대로 반영되었다. 향후 이를 기반으로 동시기 중국인이 쓴 초기 문법서들과 좀 더 심도 있는 비교 연구를 진행한다면 여러 문법 현상을 좀 더 잘 파악하는데 큰 도움이 될 것이라고 사료된다.
Abstract
In this paper, we looked at the A Chinese Manual(1904), which occupies an important position among Chinese-related grammar books published during this period. A Chinese Manual can be said to be a transitional grammar book in that it attempted to escape the existing framework while reflecting some of the research results of Western missionaries’ grammar books in the modern period. The basic formation of this book is also different from the existing Western missionaries’ grammar books in that it has both a grammar textbook and a conversation textbook. The part-of-speech system or case system of the A Chinese Manual was analyzed with a little more emphasis on Chinese, not the Latin system, and various types of Causative constructions, Passive constructions, and Ba construction were suggested. The nature of these constructions and the characteristics of the grammar form could be figured out. Regarding the time system of Chinese, the A Chinese Manual adopted the three tense theory instead of the five tense theory based on the Latin system. From this, we can see that these le⋅zhe⋅guo are grammaticalized in the order of ‘verb – phase complement – aspect marker’, which is not much different from today’s perspective. In short, if the modern times was a period when missionaries were the main axis and completed the Chinese grammar system, the early 20th century was a period of research and explanation in more diverse ways, focusing on the Chinese language itself and it was reflected in the A Chinese Manual.
