Abstract

This study examines the literary perspectives and aesthetic preferences of literati as reflected in the WenXianXiaoHua titled ShanZhongYiXiHua(山中一夕 話), specifically its second volume KaiJuanYiXiao(開卷一笑), which is attributed to Li Zhi(李贄) in the late Ming dynasty. ShanZhongYiXiHua is a compilation based on the original work KaiJuanYiXiao and has undergone various editorial modifications. Out of the 376 XiaoHua(笑話) contained in the second volume, this study analyzes those that reflect literati tastes across five thematic categories. First, XiaoHua concerning poetry and literary talent idealize the intellectual and creative capabilities of literati, showcasing a culture centered on literary refinement. Second, instances of linguistic play and witty repartee demonstrate the literati’s intellectual prowess through homophonic puns and character-splitting techniques, functioning as markers of erudition and wit. Third, XiaoHua targeting bureaucrats reveal a satirical critique of incompetent or greedy officials, reflecting the self-critical gaze within literati circles. Fourth, depictions of physical appearance and bodily functions avoid vulgarity and instead frame such elements in socio-cultural and psychological contexts. Fifth, representations of wives and women illustrate gender perceptions and values held by male literati of the time. The findings suggest that ShanZhongYiXiHua is a XiaoHua collection shaped by the literary worldview and cultural tastes of late Ming and early Qing literati.
