Abstract
This paper examines the political ambivalence of Thailand. On 22nd May 2014, General Prayut launched a surprise military coup. The move evoked strong criticisms from international society, especially from USA and EU and deepened the existing confrontation between Pro-Thaksin” group and “Anti-Thaksin” group. This hurt the already sluggish Thai economy. The paper is to address the question: why General Prayut launched the military coup despite the huge socio-economic and political costs. In order to figure out the motivation of junta, this paper describes the political situation in Thailand by focusing on the inception and collapse of Thaksin regime. The paper argues that the motives behind the coup are to remove Thaksin and “Pro-Thaksin” political groups in order to restore the so called “Thai Style Democracy” or “Semi-Democracy” and to supervise the coming royal succession to keep the political regime of the kingdom in a “good state”.
