Abstract
This study is about the time varying covariates related to the elderly’s depression trajectory and the change of the trajectory in Korea. Especially, this study expects that there can be different effects of the time varying covariates among sub-groups when population homogeneity assumptions are mitigated. For the analysis, the group-based trajectory model is used, and the results before and after applying the time-varying covariates(marital status, household income, physical function, social engagement, labor activity) to this model are compared. The data used for the analysis are the 1st ∼6th waves of longitudinal data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing, and the subjects of the analysis are 4,164 people age 65 and older. The results are summarized into the following three categories. First, five different trajectories are identified: minimal depressive symptoms, low depressive symptoms, high but decreasing depressive symptoms, low but increasing depressive symptoms, and high depressive symptoms. Second, the adjustment of time-varying covariates causes the significant change in the initial value, change rate and group proportion of each depression trajectory. Third, the time-varying covariates do not affect equally all trajectories. These findings have contributed to more generalizing the results of preceding researches on multiple trajectories of depressive symptoms of the elderly and verifying the effects of time-varying covariates. This study can be also considered to compensate such problems of preceding researches as data, influencing factors, and population homogeneity assumptions.
