Abstract
This thesis analyzes an aspect of Tanztheatrical acceptance of other cultures by studying one of the Wuppertaler Tanztheater's works, namely 「Rough Cut」(2005). 「Rough Cut」 was produced on commission for LG Arts Center and Goethe-Institut Seoul and was choreographed as one of a series of the World City Project, which has been carried out by Wuppertaler Tanztheater since the early 1980s. After a preview was given at Schauspielhaus Wuppertal in April 2005, this work had its world premier at LG Arts Center Seoul. Unexpectedly, two diametrically opposed acceptance phases of the spectators arose from this performance. Although some of them doubtlessly offered this performance unstinted praise, others furious criticized it. While some spectators reacted positive to the typical working methods of Wuppertaler Tanztheater, others found its interpretation of foreign culture quite problematic. In their opinion this work hardly showed the Korean cultural identity, even though its idea was obviously based on the traditional culture and ordinary life of Korean's. The Korean spectator's curiosity and expectation of 「Rough Cut」 like, for example, “How did Pina Bausch and her Ensemble indeed accept our korean culture?” or “Which new work was created from their acceptation as well as experience of our hometown?”, should be changed into doubt such as skepticism just same as “Is this performance really one about Korea?”. This thesis strives to expose the problems inherent in the spectator's expectations of dance and to scientifically analyze the problems in the acceptance phase of this work. As far as the spectator's expectations, it is still fixed on the clichés of other cultures, that are tied to an cultural appropriation to ‘the Other’, this expectation must permanently be problematic. Also this thesis aim at my suggestion about ‘Communication with other cultures’ instead of ‘simple Expectation as Appropriation to the Other Cultures’, that unilaterally preempts other cultures. In this sense, communication means neither one-sided appropriation nor unconditional assimilation into the other cultures. It means rather that the Other and I cause a resonance namely ‘a relationship between Us’ based on trust for each other. 「Rough Cut」 is a work in ‘Wuppertaler Tanztheater’ about ‘Korea’, in other words, it functions as a meeting point, where the universality of Wuppertaler Tanztheater's working methode meet the speciality of korean culture. This is the main topic for their creation of this work and is required to include the paradox between them. In this paradox between universality and speciality, we can find the most important attribute of the Tanztheatrical acceptance phase of other cultures.
