夏目漱石の『趣味の遺伝』における愛に対する一考察

『趣味の遺伝』は、1906（明治39）年1月10日に雑誌『帝国文学』に発表された、夏目漱石（1867～1916）の初期短編作品である。この作品の研究史には、２系列がある。厭戦文学としてみる見方と、神秘的な恋愛の物語としてみる見方である。論者は、前者の立場に同意しており、これまで、そうした視座からの研究も行ってきている。そして、主人公の周辺人物による、部分的な恋愛の物語のみに重点を置く後者の立場は、説得力が欠けるものと理解している。『趣味の遺伝』厭戦文学の構が明確であり、戦争に対する批判的な叙述が実に多量である。したがって、『趣味の遺伝』に、作中内世界を一貫するような、愛の物語を求めることは決して容易ではない。しかしながら、論者は、これまでの研究を通じて、『趣味の遺伝』に、作中を貫く愛の話が内在しているということに気付いてもいる。それは、他者によるものではなく、主人公によるものである。この作品は、その冒頭から中盤部の前半にかけて戦争への批判的な叙述で固められている。そして、終結部が厭戦の内容で括られている。また、終焉部における叙述の様相を綿密に分析すると、河上浩一と「美しい若い女」による恋愛譚がこの作品の表象する話として理解することはできない。しかし、＜書いている余＞がこの作品の主人公であることを着目し、＜書いている余＞による「美しい若い女」への愛の隠匿とその葛藤という観点から解読されるならば、作品内世界の秩序と整合した、一貫性のある愛の話の導出․考察が成立する。 本稿は、こうした新しい観点から、作中の作者である＜書いている余＞の叙述への分析と考察をもとに、『趣味の遺伝』の愛のモチーフの探求を試みた論文である。
Abstract
Soseki Natsume(1867-1916)’s short story, ‘Shuminoiden’, was published on January 10th, 1906. This study supported that ‘Shuminoiden’ was included in antiwar literature rather than romantic fantasy literature. It is because the standpoint of romantic fantasy literature only focused on the accompanying love story of surrounding peoples. As an antiwar literature, ‘Shuminoiden’ has a great many criticism of the war with the well-organized story structure. Although it was difficult to find a coherent story about love in ‘Shuminoiden’, there was a thread running through the whole story. It was a story about love, parting and inner conflict of the main character in ‘Shuminoiden’. The story began with the statement of the criticism of the war and then, concluded with an antiwar stance in the closing section. Also, based on the detailed analysis on the last part of the story, it would be hard to take ‘Shuminoiden’ as a love story in Kawakami Koich and ‘beautiful young woman’. However, when we focused on the concealed love and inner conflict of the main character (‘I who were writing’), we could assure that ‘Shuminoiden’ consistently showed the theme of love in accordance with order in the world of the story. Therefore, with a new angle on the story, this study attempted to explore the implicit motif of love in ‘Shuminoiden’ based on the main character (‘I who were writing’)’s narration.
