Abstract

This study aims to investigate the influence of parental cultural maintenance values on the preschool Korean-Chinese children’s Korean language proficiency. To that end, the data collected from 120 Korean-Chinese families living in China and Japan were analyzed using IBM SPSS 26.0 and Process macro 4.0. The results revealed the following. Firstly, when variables including gender, age, and availability of formal education of Korean language outside home were controlled, parental cultural maintenance values, Korean use at home, and children's interest in Korean had a significant positive effect on children's proficiency of Korean language. Secondly, a sequential mediating effect was identified, indicating that via the use of Korean language at home, parental cultural maintenance values were conducive to children’s interest in Korean, which was followed by children’s improved Korean language proficiency. This study justifies the effect of parental cultural maintenance values and Korean use at home as external factors and children’s interest in Korean as an internal factor, which collectively influence the preschool Korean-Chinese children's Korean language proficiency. This study also suggests the critical importance of external and internal factors in improving the children’s proficiency of Korean language.
