Abstract
Young carers face significant physical, emotional, and financial burdens due to prolonged caregiving responsibilities. In Incheon, the current support system is insufficient at every stage—from identifying eligible individuals to delivering appropriate services. This study examines the status and challenges of supporting young carers in Incheon and proposes context-specific, practical strategies for improvement. Focus group interviews were conducted with practitioners and experts, and an inductive thematic analysis was used to explore their experiences and perceptions. The findings reveal critical challenges: difficulties in identifying young carers, ambiguity in policy definitions and coverage, unclear eligibility criteria, and shortcomings in service delivery. Addressing these issues requires the establishment of clear definitions and eligibility standards, the strengthening of community-based support networks, and the expansion of respite care, psychological and social support, and financial assistance. Public awareness campaigns and targeted training programs for both practitioners and young carers are also needed. In conclusion, the study highlights the need for policy and institutional reforms and calls for the creation of an integrated support system based on cooperation among private and public sectors.
