Abstract

This study investigates the energy performance and daylighting optimization potential of curtain wall architecture using parametric shading design, focusing on Canal Walk Spring Block, an actual operating urban commercial street mall located in Songdo International City, Incheon, South Korea. The research presents a data-driven simulation framework that evaluates heating/cooling loads and daylight environment, addressing the critical issue of excessive solar radiation exposure in glass-based façades. Through baseline simulations using tools such as Climate Studio, Ladybug, and EnergyPlus, the existing building envelope—without any shading application—was evaluated using key daylight metrics, such as Spatial Daylight Autonomy (sDA) and Annual Sunlight Exposure (ASE). Based on this, a parametric algorithm was developed using Rhino-Grasshopper and Galapagos to generate optimized shading geometries that balance energy savings with visual comfort. Simulation results showed a 4.04% reduction in total annual energy consumption across the building, with the most significant improvement in heating load (16.93%). This highlights the dual benefit of regulating summer overheating and enhancing winter solar gain. Unlike prior studies that focus on enclosed office buildings or hypothetical models, this research is grounded in a real-world application involving a highly porous, transparent commercial structure. It introduces performance criteria such as sDA above 80%, ASE below 50%, and energy saving over 4%, offering practical design benchmarks for future energy-efficient building envelopes in Incheon. Furthermore, the parametric shading methodology demonstrated in this paper is scalable to other similar urban street malls in Incheon—such as Triple Street and Canalway—and contributes to the region’s initiatives toward carbon neutrality, smart green infrastructure, and urban climate responsiveness. This study positions itself as a foundational step for developing localized façade design guidelines aligned with the energy policy objectives of Incheon Metropolitan City and the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ).
