The primary aim of this article is to explore the characteristics of the combinatory relations described in The (unabridged) Korean-English Dictionary compiled in 1897, 1911, and 1931 by J. S. Gale. In these dictionaries, Gale provides vocabularies that frequently co-occur with headwords that are especially used idiomatically. In this article, these vocabularies are termed as ‘combination-related information vocabularies(CIVs).’ CIVs belong to various grammatical units, from a ‘josa’ or ending to a phrase or a sentence. The characteristics of combinatory relation found in each pair of headwords and CIVs, therefore, can be examined not only from the syntactic point of view but also from the morphological point of view. Some CIVs also have, without grammatical combinations, semantical relations with headwords. These facts show that Gale, by describing combination information from various angles, tried to include examples and usages of headwords as many as possible. It seems that he took into account foreign learners who would use the dictionary to learn Korean at that time. To describe combinatory relations of words, besides including CIVs in the definition of headwords as stated above, Gale utilizes two more ways. First, he puts combination forms of headwords and CIVs separately as a new headword. Second, he presents combination forms as a sub-headword following the definition of headwords. These multiple ways, which are used to describe combinatory relations of words in Gale(1897, 1911, 1931), have significant implications when discussing the range and method of providing combination-related information in the modern bilingual dictionary compilation or Korean education as a foreign language.
