Abstract

This paper examines how Hong Taeyong(1731-1783), a literatus of 18th-century Korea, presented problems concerning astronomical measurements in his mathematical manual, the Manual of Calculations for Practical Use (籌解需用), and how these efforts extended the scope of traditional mathematical problems into the realm of cosmology under the influence of Western mathematical knowledge. Previous studies of Hong have primarily focused on his more famous cosmological work, Dialogues on Mt. Yi (毉山問答), in which he advanced radical cosmological ideas, such as the concept of an infinite universe and the diurnal rotation of the earth. In contrast, the Manual of Calculations for Practical Use, his only mathematical work and the first book to introduce Western trigonometry in Korea, has been relatively undervalued due to its perceived low mathematical sophistication. This evaluation, however, fails to fully consider the purpose of the work and the intellectual ideas it contains. In particular, the unique aspect of Manual of Calculations for Practical Use—its inclusion of astronomical measurement problems—has often been overlooked. This paper examines the overall structure of the work and the author's intentions, starting with the preface, which shows the main ideas of Hong's work. In the preface, Hong emphasizes multiplication and division (乘除) as the fundamental principles governing the entire work. Hong regarded these operation as crucial underpinnings of the Western proportion, the Rule of Three (四率法). This paper argues that Hong, in his effort to comprehend the physical shape of heaven and earth through calculation and observation, actively employed the Rule of Three in solving measurement problems. By doing so, he integrated astronomical measurement—traditionally a domain of astronomy—into the realm of arithmetic, represented by multiplication and division. Furthermore, this paper demonstrates that Hong structured the Manual of Calculations for Practical Use  based on his recognition of the merits of Western learning, which he described as “taking arithmetic as its foundation while complementing it with instrumentation.” The insights Hong gained from solving the astronomical measurement problems, this paper finally suggests, laid the foundation for his critique of astrology, as expounded in his cosmological work.
