Abstract
In this study, the “transmitters of Korean Classical Chinese literature” refer to the 135 successive Munhyeong 文衡 (epithet for the Grand Academician) of the Joseon dynasty. They embodied authority as representatives of the literati-official community, and their symbolic role was mediated through the material form of the inkstone and the literary expression of poetry. The Jeonyeon gosa 傳硯故事 (the story of transmitting the inkstone) was the practice by which a retiring Munhyeong presented an inkstone and a poem to his successor. Initiated by Nam Gon 南袞 (1471–1527) in the early sixteenth century, it continued until Kim Yeong-su 金永壽 (1829–1899), the last Munhyeong of the nineteenth century. The inkstone, regarded as a symbol of transmitting the heart, came to be known as the Jeonsimyeon 傳心硯 (Inkstone Conveying the Heart). This study, by tracing the transmission and poetic representations of the Jeonyeon gosa , clarifies what sentiments the transmitters of premodern Korean Classical Chinese literature sought to convey. Such an inquiry demonstrates that the Jeonyeon gosa functioned as a device encapsulating the transmission practices and ideals of the literati-official community. Through this, it becomes possible to discuss both the universality and particularity of Korean Classical Chinese literature. Furthermore, it suggests the potential contribution of this study to comparative research within the Sinitic cultural sphere and in the broader context of world literature. The term “transmitters of Korean Classical Chinese literature” is thus employed with this comparative potential in mind.
