Abstract
In this paper I provide an overview of recent English-language scholarship based in North America on Korean ‘kojŏnhak’ 古典學, defined here as research on premodern Korean literary culture — studies on the interplay of language, writing, and literary culture on the Korean peninsula before the turn of the 20th century. After surveying the primary individuals engaged in research in this field since 2009, I categorize notable publications into the following seven topics: A) Scholarly studies and/or translations of different genres of both Korean vernacular and Sinitic literature; B) Annotated translations with scholarly apparatus; C) Anthologies and compendia; D) Comparative literature within the broader ‘Sinographic Cosmopolis’; E) Book history and history of print culture; F) The dynamic interplay between ‘cosmopolitan’ and ‘vernacular’; and G) premodern Korean philology. I close with a discussion of field infrastructure and the challenges facing graduate student training, and conclude that while the number of scholars teaching and conducting research on premodern Korean literary culture in North America has increased significantly during the past sixteen years, as has the number of notable publications, critical weaknesses in the infrastructure and funding for language training in both advanced academic Korean and Literary Sinitic/hanmun pose grave threats to the future viability and diversity of the field.
