Abstract
This study, relying on a randomized experimental design, investigates the ways in which fact-checking news influences voters’ perception on a candidate’s allegation on opposing candidates during the presidential election. Basically, our experiment consists of two stages. At the first stage, after being exposed to a candidate’s allegation on a competing candidate, participants’ perception on the allegation was measured: (1) candidate Moon’s allegation on candidate Ahn, (2) candidate Moon’s allegation on candidate Hong, (3) candidate Ahn’s allegation on candidate Moon, and (4) candidate Hong’s allegation on candidate Moon. At the second stage, participants were exposed to one of three types of fact-checking news, (1) “half true,” (2) “true,” and (3) “false”; and then their perception on the allegation was repeatedly measured. With these two manipulated factor, we consider one observed factor, that is, “chosen candidate,” (1) candidate Moon, (2) candidate Hong, (3) candidate Ahn, and (4) other minor candidates. Results of three-way analysis of variance explaining the change score of participants’ perception on the exposed allegation revealed that fact-checking news succeeded to change participants’ perception according to the direction of the fact-checking news judgment. Interestingly, participants exposed to fact-checking news judging “half true” thought the allegation was “false” rather than “true,” indicating news audience holds strong negativity bias towards fact-checking news’ judgment. Theoretical and practical discussions are provided.
