Abstract

This study attempted an analysis of the factors influencing whether individuals intervene or abstain from responding in cases of cyberbullying. It examined the factors influencing behaviors after witnessing cyberbullying, which were classified into “non-intervention,” “participation,” and “mediation” types. Factors were broadly categorized into personal and situational types, where personal factors were analyzed in terms of perceived social support and empathetic capabilities and situational factors were analyzed in terms of number of witnesses, anonymity, and closeness with the perpetrator and victim. An online questionnaire was administered to 1,140 high school and university students with experience witnessing cyberbullying. Regression analysis of the results showed family-based social support to be negatively correlated with participation in bullying and positively correlated with meditation, while perceived online support was negatively correlated with non-involvement and positively correlated with both mediation and participation. Participation acts were less common and mediation more active for witnesses with higher empathetic capabilities. Theoretical and practical implications and limitations of the study are discussed in the conclusion.
