Abstract

This study analyzed the impact of parenting styles on children's media viewing time, mediated by media use self-regulation abilities. A survey was conducted with 1,020 primary caregivers of children aged 6-8 years. The results showed that warm and autonomy-supportive parenting positively influenced the development of media use self-regulation, while limit-setting and disciplinary parenting styles did not affect children's media use self-regulation. Furthermore, media use self-regulation was found to reduce children's viewing time, highlighting that self-regulation is a key competency for reducing excessive media consumption. Consequently, the enhanced self-regulation abilities of children, promoted through warm and autonomy-granting parenting practices, may lead to reduced media viewing and the formation of healthy media use habits. This study suggests that improving the quality of parenting can foster the development of internal factors in children, guiding them towards desirable media usage. It emphasizes the need for parents to reflect on their role in helping children become the primary agents of their media use and to seek practical approaches to appropriate parenting methods.
