국내 뉴스 언어에서 기표 조합의 경향성: 기사 제목에 사용된 ‘공포’와 ‘분노’를 중심으로

본 연구는 기사 제목에 사용된 ‘공포’와 ‘분노’를 중심으로 뉴스 공동체에 의해 자주 발화되는 기표 간 조합의 경향을 파악하고자 했다. 연구 문제 분석을 위해, 한국언론진흥재단 제공 빅카인즈(BigKinds)로 1990년 1월 1일부터 2022년 12월 31일 사이에 보도된 기사를 수집하였다. 수집한 자료 가운데 1990년대의 기사 제목에 ‘공포’ 혹은 ‘분노’라는 기표를 사용했던 34개 언론사(전국일간지 9개, 경제일간지 4개, 방송사 3개, 전문지 18개)에서 보도한 56,907건(공포: 33,952건, 분노: 22,955건)의 기사를 분석 자료로 선정하였다. 기사 제목에 공포가 등장하는 언론보도의 상위 빈도 10개 시기에 함께 사용된 기표들은 감염병 확산(메르스 확산, 코로나19 확산, 에볼라 확산), 자연재해 발생(동일본 대지진), 유해 물질 확산(탄저균 테러, 멜라민 오염), 北 정치 현황(현영철 공개 처형)이라는 사건을 가리키고 있었다. 분노를 기사 제목에 사용한 언론보도의 상위 빈도 10개 시기는 중대 사회 사건(최순실 국정농단 사태 및 촛불시위, 세월호 참사), 공정 관련 청년 분노(LH 땅투기 의혹, 2021년 재보궐 선거, 조국 사태, 인천국제공항공사 보안검색요원 직고용), 일반 사회/스포츠 사건(美 조지 플로이드 사망, 아동 학대 살인 사건, 인천 어린이집 폭행, 크림빵 뺑소니, 베이징 올림픽 쇼트트랙 편파 판정)이라는 기의를 전달하였다. 분석 결과를 토대로, 기사 제목에 사용된 공포 혹은 분노에 관한 저널리즘 연구 및 실천 측면의 함의를 제시하였다.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify the tendencies in signifier combinations frequently triggered by the news community, focusing on the use of ‘fear’ and ‘anger’ in article headlines. To analyze the research problem, we collected articles reported between January 1, 1990, and December 31, 2022, from BigKinds, provided by the Korea Press Foundation. Among the collected data, we selected 56,907 articles (Fear: 33,952 articles, Anger: 22,955 articles) reported by 34 different media outlets (9 national dailies, 4 economic dailies, 3 broadcasters, and 18 specialized journals) that used ‘fear’ or ‘anger’ as signifiers in article headlines during the 1990s. The top 10 signifiers commonly used with ‘fear’ in article headlines referred to events such as the spread of infectious diseases (MERS, COVID-19, Ebola outbreaks), natural disasters (Hanshin Earthquake), the spread of harmful substances (anthrax terrorism, melamine contamination), and the political situation in North Korea (Hyun Young-chul‘s public execution). The top 10 signifiers used with ‘anger’ in article headlines represented significant social events (Choi Soon-sil’s influence-peddling scandal and candlelight protests, Sewol Ferry tragedy), youth anger related to justice (LH land speculation allegations, 2021 by-elections, Cho Kuk scandal, Incheon International Airport Corporation security search staff employment), and general societal/sports incidents (George Floyd’s death, child abuse and murder cases, violence in Incheon daycare center, cream bread incident, Beijing Olympics short track unfair judgment). Based on the analysis results, implications for journalism research and practice related to the use of ‘fear’ or ‘anger’ in article headlines were presented.
