일상으로 파고든 디지털 미디어는 자아를 표현하고 정체성을 실험하는 중요한 장을 제공한다. 본 연구는 국내외에서 디지털 기반 정체성 탐색이 디지털 미디어와 함께 성장해나가고 있는 디지털 네이티브에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구가 부족하다는 점을 지적하며, 이를 체계적으로 탐구하기 위한 연구문제 및 과제를 제안한다. 이를 위해 자아정체성 발달 이론, 전통적인 정체성 연구, 디지털 미디어 효과에 관한 최근의 연구들을 종합적으로 검토하였다. 특히, 자아표현 및 자아탐색과 관련된 기존 커뮤니케이션학의 미디어 효과 연구를 전통적인 정체성 이론과 연계하여, 새로운 연구 아젠다로 확장될 가능성을 강조하였다. 향후 연구과제는 ① 디지털 미디어 기반 정체성 탐색 커뮤니케이션, ② 미디어 효과로서 정체성 발달의 궤적, ③ 긍정적 발달의 조건, ④ 개인·집단·문화적 차이의 영향을 포함한다. 이는 향후 커뮤니케이션 분야에서 자아 표현 및 정체성 탐색의 다양한 경로들을 심층적으로 탐색할 수 있는 이론적 토대를 마련한다는 함의를 지닌다. 이에 더하여 디지털 환경이 청소년 정체성 발달에 미치는 기회와 위험의 양면성을 고려하고, 학제적 접근과 엄격한 연구방법의 필요성을 제언하였다.
Abstract
The digital media environment serves as a vital platform for adolescents navigating identity crises, providing unique opportunities for self-expression and identity exploration. This study addresses the limited research on the developmental impacts of digital-based identity exploration and proposes a theoretical framework to enhance understanding. Through a comprehensive review of identity development theories, traditional self and identity research, and recent studies on digital media effects, the study emphasizes the potential to expand communication research on media effects related to self-expression and identity exploration by integrating perspectives from developmental psychology. The proposed research agendas comprises (1) patterns of identity exploration communication in digital media, (2) trajectories of identity development within digital environments, (3) conditions fostering positive development, and (4) the influence of individual, group, and cultural differences. By highlighting the dual opportunities and risks associated with digital environments, the study underscores the importance of interdisciplinary approaches and rigorous methodologies. This research lays a theoretical foundation for future investigations in communication studies and offers practical insights for fostering adolescent identity development in digital contexts.
