Abstract

· Research Topic: The purpose of this study is to explore in-depth how teenagers build their own digital narratives and form their identity on short-form platforms such as TikTok, and the dynamics and meaning of the process. · Research Background: For adolescents, a digital native generation, the short-form platform has become a key stage of life to explore and express their identity. They practice 'building a digital narrative' that captures their experiences and values in a short video and form a fluid identity through interactions with others and algorithms. · Differences from prior research: While existing studies have highlighted risk factors such as the addictive nature or harmfulness of short forms or focused on media literacy education, this study looks at youth as the subject of a 'participatory culture' that actively creates its own narrative by creatively using the grammar of the platform rather than a passive audience. In particular, it was intended to investigate the multi-layered dynamics of identity formation by presenting an analysis framework called 'relational-algebraic ego' as a new subjectivity formed under the influence of others and algorithms. · Research Method: A qualitative case study was conducted by selecting five teenagers aged 15 to 17 who were active on the short-form platform as intentional samples. Based on Netnography, which is suitable for online cultural research, online participation observation, digital artifacts collection, and in-depth interviews were conducted for about six months, and the collected data were analyzed in depth by Thematic Analysis method. · Research results: As a result of the analysis, the establishment of a digital narrative of adolescents appeared as three key themes. First, they created an original narrative through 'comedy appropriation and hybrid reconstruction' that combines popular memes with their experiences. Second, they experienced ambivalent emotions of a sense of accomplishment and anxiety in the process of 'perform relational self and struggle for recognition' to confirm their existence through 'likes' and comments. Third, their identity showed a characteristic mediated by technology by constantly negotiating with an 'alignment mirror' called a recommendation system and a 'platform affordance' called a time constraint within one minute. · Contributions and expected effects: This study reinterprets the identity of adolescents as a 'living archive' that curates fragmented narratives and makes academic contributions to explain the subjectivity of the digital age through a new concept of 'relational-algalistic self'. Educationally, it is expected to contribute to the growth of adolescents as reflective and subjective digital citizens by proposing specific contents and methods of "critical platform literacy" education that include algorithm decoding, digital narrative integration, and emotional capacity building.
