초록
This study examined how multicultural youths in a monoethnic country use digital media to navigate the complexity of their multiple ethnic identities. The analysis of the retrospective accounts of 17 South Korean young adults revealed that the participants utilized digital media to explore topics related to their multiethnic heritages, reconcile tensions arising in the process of identity exploration, and strengthen their aspired ethnic identity. Digital media provided a culturally empowering space where the participants formed connections and achieved a sense of belongingness and solidarity with other in-group members and media influencers and self-represented their ethnic group. However, media presented challenges, as they amplified diverse views on multiculturalism, particularly hostile and discriminatory discourses online. Overall, the findings underscore the complex role of digital media in the construction of the multicultural identity of ethnic minority youths in a monoethnic society.
