Abstract
This study aims to explore the effects of media usage types on climate change belief, involvement, risk perception, and collective efficacy. Specifically, it examines how the use of mass media (TV, newspapers) and social media (YouTube, Facebook, X, Instagram) influences (1) belief in climate change as a human-induced phenomenon, (2) risk perception based on experiences of extreme weather events (e.g., heavy rain, heatwaves), (3) the level of individual involvement in climate change issues, and (4) collective efficacy—the belief that society can overcome climate change through joint efforts. Additionally, the study investigates whether age moderates the relationship between media usage and climate change perceptions. A survey was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 1,053 Korean adults aged 20 to 69, reflecting population ratios in terms of gender and residence. The results show that mass media and YouTube positively influenced climate change beliefs, while involvement was significantly affected by mass media, YouTube, and Facebook. Risk perception was influenced by both mass media and YouTube, and collective efficacy by mass media, YouTube, and Facebook. Moreover, the interaction effect between media type and age was significant: YouTube had a stronger impact on beliefs and risk perception among older adults, while mass media increased collective efficacy among younger adults. These findings suggest meaningful implications for identifying effective media channels by age group to enhance climate change awareness and engagement among the Korean public.
