Abstract
This study investigates whether climate change knowledge and risk perception act as mediating variables in the relationship between media use and pro-environmental behavior, and further examines climate change knowledge and risk as a serial mediators in the link between media use and pro-environmental behavior. Specifically, this study examines three different types of media (social media, internet, and TV) influence pro-environmental behaviors(private and public) through climate change knowledge and risk perception (personal vs. social level). To verify the proposed relationships, an analysis was conducted on 1,156 middle school students using the data from the National Youth Policy Institute in Korea (the Youth Climate Change Survey 2022). The findings indicated that climate change knowledge was a significant mediator in the relationship between Internet use and private environmental behavior. Furthermore, the indirect effect of climate change knowledge was significant in the link between Internet use and public environmental behavior. However, the indirect effect of risk perception(both personal and societal level) on media use and pro-environmental behavior was not significant. Meanwhile, the indirect effect of social level risk was significant in the relationship between TV use and private pro-environmental behavior. Lastly, climate change knowledge and personal level risk as well as societal level risk perception served as a serial mediator in the link between Internet use to private environmental behavior. Based on the results of this study, explanations and implications for the types of media use and pro-environmental behavior were discussed.
