Methods: Ten new nurses who participated in this qualitative study shared their experience of clinical adaptation in psychiatry. Data were analyzed using Giorgi’s phenomenological method. In-depth personal interviews were conducted from December 2015 to September 2016. Results: Based on this study, the clinical experience of adaptation of new nurses working in psychiatric hospitals consisted of fifteen themes and five theme clusters: “Feels attracted to psychiatry”, “Frustration due to lack of nursing capacity”, “Experiences an unbearably heavy burden”, “Finding my place” and “Developing my life”. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop and apply a manual to reduce the experience of maladjustment of new nurses, and to support by actively utilizing mentoring program or preceptor system.
