Abstract

This study examines the effects of maternal and teacher’s autonomy support on young children’s executive function. The questionnaire survey method was conducted to target 235 mothers and 69 early childhood teachers working at kindergarten for children between age 3-5 in Gyeonggi Province. The questionnaires on maternal and teacher’s autonomy support were distributed and collected among the mothers and teachers. And data on executive function were measured using BRIEF-P by teachers completing the questionnaires. There was significant interrelationship between young children’s executive function, and maternal and teacher’s autonomy support. And maternal and teacher’s autonomy support were positive factors in predicting young children’s executive function. In addition, on the child's execution function according to gender: the mother's autonomy support had greater influence on the boys, whereas the teacher's autonomy support held a bigger impact on the girls. Furthermore, the entire group of children had an increased effect in the order of teacher's autonomy support, and mother’s autonomy support. The results of this research suggest that both mother and teacher’s autonomy support are important variables in the development of children's executive function, but it is necessary to emphasize teacher’s autonomy support as the age of children increases.
