Abstract
This study examines the desires of the characters in the novel Hwacha and analyzes them from a gender perspective along with cultural history. First, Lacan's concept of object a is borrowed for desire analysis, which is not a substance, but a place of deficiency and an empty object that causes desire. Humans constantly seek object a to fill the lack and emptiness of existence. For the three representative characters in Hwacha, Lacan's object a appears as Shoko Sekine to Kazuya, as a new identity to Shoko, and as a society or competent investigator with justice to Honma. However because it is a fantastic object that can never be possessed, they fall into an infinite bondage to acquire the object a. How did desire become established in them? Since desire is composed simultaneously at the individual and social levels, it is necessary to analyze the narrative of Hwacha again from a gender perspective to understand the desires and frustrations of the characters in Hwacha. From a gender point of view, the narrative of Hwach reads Honma's solitude as an absence of intimacy, and Kazuya Kuri-Saka and Shoko's father as a symbol of drifting masculinity. The characters in Hwacha pursue a normal family in order to acquire social normality, and in the case of women, their bodies are engaged in the sex industry. This shows that women's poverty and sex industry are closely connected. Miyuki Miyabe's novel Hwacha, the original work of the movie <Hwacha>, was written in the background of Japanese society in the 1990s, but problems such as desire, deficiency, and self-alienation in the work are still valid and appear repeatedly in modern Korean society. In particular, the novel Hwacha gives an opportunity to confirm how the hidden gender problems in the work are reflected in modern Korean society. This study recognizes the desire structure and proposes distance and reflection from the ideal image in order to escape the infinite bond of desire. It also recommends moving away from the pursuit of non-substantial normality such as masculinity and normal family and toward a gender-equal society free from exploitation.
