Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate prospective elementary teachers’ achievement goal orientations in small group work in the aspects of trichotomous types (mastery, performance-approach, and performance-avoidance) and two levels (individual and individual-within-a-group). A total of 142 (51 male, 91 female) undergraduates enrolled in a science method course were assigned to a group of three or four, and participated in several small group activities to design elementary science lessons. It was found that correlations among trichotomous goal orientations at the level of individual-within-a-group, collaborative self-efficacy, and team-efficacy were positive. The results of cluster analysis by individual goal and ANOVA showed that the mastery-goal orientation was the most essential factor. However, the results of cluster analysis by individual-within-a-group goal and t-test indicated that all three goal orientations were important. The implications and future directions for science education were discussed.
