Abstract

This thesis has analyzed the process of collective resistance of the Ye(濊族) society against Wiman Joseon(衛滿朝鮮) and establishment of Changhae Commandery(滄海郡) of Han(漢) Dynasty in 128 BC, and through this endeavor, it has reviewed the trend of the Ye society around Wiman Joseon approximately 2nd century BC. Prior to the founding of Wiman Joseon, the Ye society that was broadly spread out in Youngseo(嶺西) and Youngdong(嶺東) region of the eastern Gojoseon was developed around Imdun(臨屯) and its northeastern part in the Okjeo(沃沮) region. However, with Wiman Joseon established in early 2nd century BC, the Imdun and Okjeo societies was subjected to Wiman Joseon. Thereafter, in the era of King Ugeo(右渠) at a later time of the 2nd century, Wiman Joseon strengthened its control over the surrounding Ye society even more and this ultimately brought in the resistance of Yegunnamnye(薉君南閭)-led Ye society. The Ye society that was united with Yegunnamnye leading the way was formed with Imdun and Okjeo as well as the Guryeo(句麗) group in the mid-basic of Amrok River(鴨綠江), and they broke away from the ruling of Wiman Joseon to contact with Liaodong Commandery(遼東郡). Therefore, Han Dynasty had a plan to establish Changhae Commandery with these groups. It is understood that the central site of Changhae Commandery that was established with the subject of Yegunnamnye group was the east coastal region of Hangyeongnam-do(咸鏡南道), namely, the Okjeo region. The presence of the silver seal in 「Bujoyegun(夫租薉君)」 that is data in the first half of the 1st century BC is the practical data to display the presence of ‘Yegun(薉君)’ in the Okjeo society at the time. The Okjeo area was the political base of Yegunnamnye was well-equipped to join the independent forces after breaking away from the influence of Wiman Joseon. For the Okjeo society to stand independently by staying away from Wiman Joseon’s control, it had to search for a new route to communicate with outside. The establishment process of Changhae Commandery was the process of pioneering the new transport route for such purport. Accordingly, the establishment of Changhae Commandery was processed by pioneering the transport route to lead from the Aprok-gang basin to Hamheung. However, it could not overcome many layers of mountainous terrains over the transport route and the establishment of Changhae Commandery for the Han Dynasty came to a screeching stop after 3 years.
