Abstract
This study aims to examine the influx patterns of Chinese migrants(亡人) into Old Chosŏn during the 3rd to 2nd centuries BCE and its significance. First, this study analyzes the characteristics and establishment purpose of the Liaodong Outer Frontier(遼東外徼) that appeared during the external expansion of the Qin(秦) dynasty. The Liaodong Outer Frontier is understood as a facility installed in the newly expanded territory beyond the Old Fortress(故塞) of the Liaodong Commandery following the unification by Qin. According to the usage of jiao(徼) found in literature and bamboo slips, the Liaodong Outer Frontier served as a standard for preventing the defection of its own people(邦亡) as well as border defense. At that time, the Qin experienced an exodus of residents during the unification wars and the construction of the Great Wall. Synthesizing these points, it appears that the purpose of Qin establishing the Liaodong Outer Frontier in the Old Chosŏn region was to defend the borders, as well as to prevent the defection of its own people that emerged during the post-unification chaos and the construction of the Great Wall. Next, it examines the migrants who flowed into Old Chosŏn during the chaotic transition from the Qin to the Han(漢) dynasty and the subsequent process of Wiman's(衛滿) rise to power. First, inscribed bronze weapons of the Qin, Wei(魏), and Zhao(趙) states excavated in the Liaodong, Jilin, and northwestern Korean regions were analyzed. Synthesizing the characteristics of each inscribed weapon, it is understood that the main agents using the Qin and Wei weapons were related to Qin's military activities, while the Zhao weapons were associated with migrants from the late Warring States period. In particular, the main agents of the Qin and Wei weapons were soldiers mobilized for border defense, and it is considered that they became migrants amidst the chaos and buried these weapons. Meanwhile, the functions of the Liaodong Outer Frontier(Shangxia zhang, 上下鄣) served as the background that enabled Wiman to seize power after his exile. The Liaodong Outer Frontier was a space where Chinese migrants and the indigenous forces of Old Chosŏn coexisted, and by securing this region, Wiman was able to stably secure his power base and seize power. Finally, it observes that the influx of migrants during the Wiman Chosŏn period served as a justification for the Han invasion. The migrant issue raised by Emperor Wu of Han during the reign of King Ugeo(右渠王) was a crucial pending issue within Han's foreign strategy at the time, including its relationship with the Xiongnu(匈奴). Under these circumstances, King Ugeo's active acceptance of migrants served as an excuse for the Han invasion. It is understood that the primary migrants who flowed in during the Wiman Chosŏn period were from the Qi(齊) and Yan(燕) regions. The influx of migrants from the Qi region can be confirmed through the case of Wang Zhong(王仲) and the existence of Chancellor of Nigye, Cham(尼谿相 參) identified at the end of the Wiman Chosŏn period. They seem to have flowed into the Wiman Chosŏn region due to reasons such as the instability of the Qi region in the early Han period. Also, there are cases of Yan residents such as Chancellor Lu Ren(相 路人), and it is understood that the influx of Yan migrants during this period was due to continuous attacks by the Xiongnu and public labor for the establishment of commanderies and counties. In conclusion, it can be seen that the influx of Chinese migrants had a profound impact not only on the demographic composition of Old Chosŏn but also on its political fluctuations and foreign relations.
