Abstract

This study explores the National Movement of the Daejonggyo in the 1930s and the Imo-gyobyeon Incident which was forcibly repressed by Japanese imperialism. After the establishment of Manchukuo, by the Japanese, the activities of Daejonggyo began under the approval of the Consulate General. The national movement of Daejonggyo in Manchukuo has been criticized to be weaker in comparing with its armed activities of the 1920s. However, unlike the anti-Japanese armed struggle of Daejonggyo during the 1920's, its national movement in the 1930s looked to keep its internal solidarity and national culture. In Manchuria of the 1930s, the anti-Japanese armed struggle of the Korean nationalist camps was ended by Manchuria Incident, and Koreans in Manchuria were directly controlled and ruled by Japanese imperialism through Manchukuo. Therefore, Daejonggyo’s anti-Japanese movement also had to change its deployment. The key concepts of religious policy in Manchukuo could be expressed with the words, “utilization” and “control”. The government allowed religious freedom only to whom conformed to the religious policy and weaved them in its ruling orders. In response to the policy, Daejonggyo worked out a dual strategy. Daejonggyo superficially followed the policy but maneuvered the national movement. North Manchuria in the mid and late 1930s, Daejonggyo came to have 52 churches and 16,764 members and deployed the national movements such as building a Dangun Hall ; teaching Korean language and history at the Balhae and Daejong Schools ; and publishing religious and history books written in Korean. These accomplishments were achieved with the cooperation of the Daejonggyo and An heeje, the founder of Balhae Farm. In addition, they held Gaecheonjeol, the National Foundation Day of Korea, on the 3rd of every October. Teaching Daejonggyo doctrine and Korean history was, in and of itself, against the Colonial policy. The national movement of Daejonggyo was a stumbling block to the wartime policies of the Japanese in Manchukuo. Daejonggyo tried to preserve Korean language and culture even when the Japanese government strengthened the ‘Japanization policy’ during the Sino-Japanese War. These efforts, however, caused Japan to oppress Daejonggyo.
