Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore Daejonggyo’s efforts in reconstructing its status as a religious organizations and to highlight what kind of identity Daejonggyo pursued in their activities in the period after the liberation of Korea in 1945 up to the 1960s. For this purpose, firstly, I reviewed Daejonggyo’s activities for rebuilding its status as a religious organizations after Im-o'sgyobyeon incident in 1942. Then, I examined Daejonggyo’s activities in the processes of reconstructing the country after the liberation and rebuilding Daejonggyo after the return of the organization to Korea in 1946. In particular, Daejonggyo, after the return to Korea, actively participated in the process of establishing the country at the individual and group level. However, at the same time, in order to rebuilt Daejonggyo’ religious status, its members focused mostly on the creation of Tangun(檀君) culture, reconstructing their religious organizations, and school education. Through the analysis of above mentioned processes, we can confirm that the identity which Daejonggyo’s pursued at that time was the religious identity, based on high social awareness, not the political identity. I hope this paper will somehow contribute to the study of Daejonggyo in two ways. Firstly, I hope it will contribute to rethinking the view in which Daejonggyo is being seen as ‘an organization which pretend to be a religion for the purpose of the independent movement’. And secondly, I hope this paper will stimulate researchers to pay more attention to Daejonggyo in modern times. These two points are connected. Because we can not explain the religious activities and identity that Daejonggyo has shown since 1945 through the view that it simply pretended to be a religion for the purpose of the independent movement.
