Abstract
Fangyan(方言), the Chinese first regional vocabulary dictionary compiled in the early 1st century AD, contains 60 vocabularies spoken in Choseon(朝鮮)-Yeolsu(洌水) and Northern Yeon(北燕) regions, which were historic territory of the Gochosun Kingdom. By isogloss method of linguistic geographics to analyze vocabulary of Chosun-Yeolsu region and Northern Yeon region, it is revealed that the above two regions were belonged to a same linguistic area that used a considerable proportion of common vocabularies. On the other hand, the lexicon of those two regions was not closely related to vocabulary of adjacent Yeon(燕)-Dae(代) region and other dialect areas of ancient Chinese in territory of the Han(漢) Dynasty. In this regard, considering the historic connections between Choseon region and Northern Yeon region which had been originally western territory of the Gochoseon Kingdom but was incorporated into the Yeon Kingdom by the war in the early 3rd century BC, the final territory of the Gochoseon Kingdom which was conquered by the Han Dynasty in 108 BC, it is highly likely that many of these two local vocabularies were not dialect of ancient Chinese, but native vocabulary of ancient Chosun Kingdom’s indigenous people. According to records of Shiji(史記) and Sanguozhi(三國志) etc., and the comments of Kwak Park, a representative linguist and geographer in the Jin(晉) Dynasty, on the text of Fangyan, it is reasonable to assume that geographical scope of the Choseon-Northern Yeon language area was from Sanggok(上谷), Beijing neighborhoods today, Southern Manchuria and to northwestern part of Korean peninsula, which was basically correspond to the area of Liaoning(Mandolinshaped) bronze dagger culture distribution.
