Abstract
A Study on the Linguistic Affiliation of Gojoseon(『고조선의 언어계통연구』), published in 2018 by the Northeast Asian History Foundation, is a scholarly book of trying to find out the linguistic identity of Gojoseon domain's vocabulary through a linguistic research method on FangYan(『方言』) the earliest dialect dictionary of China compiled about 2,000 years ago. As the first academic book in Korea and perhaps in the world to analyze the Gojoseon language under a single specialized subject, this book, compiled by combining the recent research results of several professional scholars, outlines and updates the research achievements on the Gojoseon language. It served as an opportunity to inform the domestic academia and the general public about FangYan, a language material that was not well known, and the vocabulary of Gojoseon area that were listed in the dictionary. In particular, the linguistic identity of the ‘Joseon’ regional vocabulary was implied that it was not ancient Chinese, but ancestral language of Korean by performing a full-scale comparative analysis of the vocabulary of the ‘Joseon’ listed in FangYan with the related vocabulary of the neighboring peoples close to Korean as Mongolian, Manchu, and Eowonkur. In this way, it can be positively evaluated that it has achieved an academic response to non academic claims with strong political intent, such as the 'problem attributing the history of Gojoseon to China'. However, in this academic book made a fatal mistake of giving up lexicon of North Yeon(北燕) region, the former 'Western territory' of Gojoseon on its own analysis data base, therefore complete linguistic proof that vocabulary of Gojoseon was not Chinese became difficult. As a result, it exposed the limitations of not being able to raise an academic opinion in earnest that the vocabulary of the 'Joseon' region in FangYan was not Chinese but Old Korean. This can be seen as a result of largely reflecting the existing research level of the Korean academic community, where there are very few researchers of the Old Korean language and the research density is also rare. Nevertheless, the first achievement of this book to provide the academic foundation necessary to promote new research while overcoming fatal mistake in the future can be highly appreciated.
